Gurkha Restaurant serves a variety of Nepalese dishes in a relaxed and informal setting.
As one of my favourite restaurants is Sherpa on Langeleidsedwaarstraat in Amsterdam I was delighted to find a Nepalese restaurant much closer to home! I took my partner, Louise, on Wednesday 13th Feb for an early valentine's dinner. Only 2 of the 7 tables were occupied when we arrived for our 8pm reservation. The proprietor, Dilip Rai, is a genial chap and made us feel very welcome but didn't intrude on our evening. The menu is fairly similar to many Indian restaurants with a few more obviously Nepalese variations. Louise opted for aloo dum followed by chicken madras. The Gurkha Set Meal was much more what I was expecting - mixed starter, a choice of 2 of chicken, lamb or pork Tarkari (a Nepalese curry I think) served with vegetable tarkari, dall, and pilau rice. I was certainly not disappointed with my choice, but preferred the aloo dum to my mixed starter. The aloo dum and chicken madras were cooked perfectly and tasted beautiful. The chicken, lamb and veg tarkari were exactly what I was hoping for - delightful. We chose a bottle of wine with the meal and the total cost came to under £35, and that also included a bottle of Gurkha beer . A really enjoyable evening, we will definitely eat there again soon.Highlights:Friendliness, quality of food, value for money, cleanliness, on-street parking right outside. Lowlights:It would be helpful to see the drinks available and prices on the menu. The choice of background music last night may not be to everyone's taste, but the volume was not intrusive.Summary:Add it to your list, its well worth a visit.
